The History Of Bidar Boat Palembang


In the past, to maintain the security of Palembang region who has 108 tributaries and the River Musi, needed a fast running boat. Then the Sultanate of Palembang river formed patrol unit by using the boat, the boat was named "Pancalang" which comes from the word pancal and Lang / ilang, the meaning of pancal is put off, while the meaning ofilang is disappeared. So the meaning of Pancalang is the fastest disappeared boat.



This boat has a length of 10-20 meters, a width of about 1.5 - 3 meters, this boat usually rowing by  8-10 people, and it can carry 50 people, because it can accommodate many people. Pancalang also can be the transportation in Musi River.
According to historians, Pancalang boat is the origin of Bidar boat. To keep the preservation of the boat bidar,so it helds the bidar boat race that took place since the time of Palembang Darussalam Sultanate. The competition was often called wong doeloe as "Kenceran".




The type of Bidar boat.

The first type: The Achievement Bidar Boat, this boat has a length of 12.70 meters, width 60 cm and high 1.2 meters. The number of rowers 24 people, consisting of 22 paddlers, 1 skipper and 1 handyman bucket of water. These boats are usually seen and competed on every June 17, coinciding with the anniversary of Palembang City.

The second type: The Traditional Bidar Boat, this second boat has a length of 29 meters, 80 cm high and 1.5 meters wide. The number of rowers 57 people, consisting of 55 paddlers, 1 skipper the boat and a handyman bucket of water. This boat used to be and are contested in every August, coinciding with the anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia
